Celebrating 150 Years of the McKay School

For 150 years, preparing educators and clinicians has been a labor of love at this university—both love of knowledge and love of using it to bless others. Karl Maeser, Brigham Young Academy’s first principal, noted that “it is the purpose of education to lop off selfish inclinations and engraft in their place self-denial, self-control, obedience, love, integrity, and other virtues.” His successor, Benjamin Cluff Jr., saw his chosen career as “the work of God … to give the young people an intellectual training (and) a thorough knowledge of the gospel.”

Half a century later, at the opening of the McKay Building, President David O. McKay echoed these founders in calling on “my dear fellow students” to bring their best to their future professions: “To instill into the hearts of students a love for truth is one of the prime purposes of this building we dedicate today.”

Throughout fall and winter terms, we at the McKay School will salute the legacy of these and other people who shaped our journey; highlight the faculty, students, and alumni who share great moral light with a world that hungers for it; and enjoy publications, events, and unity-building purpose as we enjoy this anniversary year and look to the future. We invite you to follow along, participate where you can, and be a part of the celebration of all we have been, all we are, and all we hope to become.
