BS in Special Education
Overview
Jesus ministered to individuals with disabilities with profound compassion, recognizing their infinite and divine potential (see 3 Nephi 17:6–10). Following His example, the special education program fosters the same love and commitment to those with disabilities. In this program, you will learn to identify and understand the unique needs of students with disabilities while developing the skills necessary to help them reach their full potential (see Doctrine and Covenants 88:19). Throughout the program, you will engage in both study and hands-on experiences. Coursework aligns with practical application, allowing you to bridge theory with real-world practice.

As a participant in this program, you will develop essential skills, including:
- Designing effective lesson plans and instructional strategies
- Assessing academic, social, and functional abilities
- Identifying, selecting, and implementing evidence-based interventions
- Understanding the importance of ongoing reflection and progress monitoring
- Making data-driven decisions to enhance student outcomes
- Collaborating effectively with parents, colleagues, and other professionals

Prerequisites
In order to apply to the major, you must first complete the following:
Declare the Special Education Pre-Major
See a program advisor in the Educational Advisement Center to assist with the major change and review GPA and test scores.
Apply for fingerprinting and FBI background check
View Fingerprinting to learn more. Allow for 1-3 weeks for the fingerprints to be processed.
During CPSE 203 12 hours of volunteer work will be completed.
Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from the program, you must first complete the following:
Complete 63 major credits
See a program advisor in the Educational Advisement Center to assist with creating an academic plan.
Complete Fall & Winter Practicum

Pass the Praxis 5354 exam
Obtain a score of 160 or more. Visit Praxis Info to learn more.
Apply for licensure with the Utah State Board of Education
The Advisement Center will email students instructions to complete the licensure process with the Utah State Board of Education upon graduation.
How to Apply
To apply to the Special Education major, follow these steps by February 5 (for early admission) or August 1 (for late admission):

Start a Special Education program application
Access the Educator application system and register for free. Complete the admissions checklist in the application.
Submit the application before August 1
Complete application and submit by February 5 for early admission, and August 1 at the latest.
